Signage and visible deterrents are the one part of a security setup you can buy today and fit yourself. They work on opportunists, they cost very little, and they pair well with a monitored system — but they are deterrence only. A sign does not call anyone.

Alarm warning signs and stickers

The cheapest deterrent there is. A visible sign stating the property is alarmed does work on opportunists — but only put one up if it is true. A sign claiming monitoring you do not have is a bluff that fails the moment someone tests it.

Monitored and police-response signs

Signs stating the property is monitored by a central station. Only appropriate once you actually hold a monitoring contract — see what police response really requires before displaying one.

CCTV and video surveillance signs

If you operate CCTV in the UK you are generally expected to signpost it — signage is part of telling people recording is happening, which is a data protection obligation for businesses and for any camera covering beyond your own boundary.

Guard dog and beware of the dog signs

A long-standing deterrent, and one worth a word of caution: in some circumstances a sign asserting a dangerous dog can be used as evidence that you knew the animal posed a risk. A neutral "dog on premises" wording is the safer choice.

Dummy and decoy cameras

Deterrence without recording. Reasonable as a visible supplement to a real system; not a substitute for one, since a dummy camera produces no evidence and no alert. Choose one that looks plausible — an obvious fake deters nobody.

Dummy alarm bell boxes

The external siren box is the most recognisable sign of an alarm system, which is why dummy versions sell. Same caveat as decoy cameras: it is a deterrent only, and a live bell box on a real system is a far better buy.

Private property and no cold caller signs

The quieter end of deterrence. No cold caller signs measurably reduce doorstep approaches, which matters more than it sounds — doorstep callers are a common reconnaissance route.

Signs are the start, not the answer
